MSS16 alumni Carlos M Entrena Utrilla and Paul Iliffe report back from IAC16, Mexico

Three ISU Master of Space Studies (MSS) Program alumni, Carlos M Entrena Utrilla, Marta Rocha de Oliviera and Paul Iliffe, took the opportunity to take part in the 2016 International Astronautical Congress (IAC16).

Carlos Utrilla SSP15 & MSS16 recently wrote about this experience:

”I’ve been working over the past two years to transition my career to the space industry, and attending IAC2016 after finishing MSS was the perfect final step for my work. This was my first time attending the conference, and I tried to maximize my participation. Because of this, I also joined the Space Generation Congress (SGC), which takes places directly before IAC, and other SGAC activities. At SGC, I was selected as moderator of the space situational awareness working group, which created a number of recommendations for the UN to deal with space debris in the long term. On the Sunday between SGC and IAC, I moderated the SGAC Mars Analogue Simulation Workshop, one of the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) events related to IAC, where my group discussed experiments to be done in future analogue missions at the SGAC habitat in Poland. Finally at IAC, I presented three papers. First, my MSS individual project, Development roadmap and business case for a Martian settlement. The second one was my winner paper for the Space is Business competition, which I also presented at SGC. The competition is organized yearly by the SGAC and the Entrepreneurship and Investment Committee (EIC) of the IAF. The paper was titled Asteroid-COTS: developing the cislunar economy with private-public partnerships, and outlined a proposal for a private-public partnership program to develop commercial asteroid mining capabilities. Finally, I presented a project I had worked on with SGAC, titled Safety Analysis of Spacesuit Design for Martian Surface, as an interactive presentation with ISU SSP15 alum Laura Bettiol. As winner of the Space is Business competition, I also participated in the meeting of the EIC, and had the chance to discuss the topic of next year’s competition. Overall, I tried to attend as many events as possible, and had the chance to meet personalities such as ESA’s Director General Jan-Dietrich Werner, and NASA’s Deputy Administrator Dava Newmann. IAC was an amazing event, and a great closure for my ISU year.”

And Marta Rocha de Oliviera’s (SSP15 & MSS16) participation to IAC16 was capped by the 2016 International Astronautical Federation’s Emerging Space Leaders award!

WHAT OUR ALUMNI SAY

"My life can be clearly divided between before and after ISU. ISU was a breaking point that created a world of possibilities in front of me."

Carmen Felix - MSS10 -

"Attending ISU has been, for me, the ultimate eye-opening experience. Attending the Master of Space Studies allowed me to pursue my personal interests with a limit determined only by my imagination."

Diego Urbina - MSS09 -

"My space flight was the changing point in my whole life. Since my background was mechanical engineering, I did not know much about space, which led me to the International Space University."

Soyeon Yi - SSP09 -

"ISU is broadening the global space community and connecting New Space countries to old and mighty ones."

Mart Vihmand - SSP11&MSS13 -
