Astronaut Daniel Tani to give SSP17 Soffen Memorial Lecture

Astronaut Daniel Tani has been confirmed to give the International Space University’s Soffen Memorial Lecture on Tuesday 27th June at 20.00 GMT+1 in Cork Institute of Technology, Ireland, in front of a giant Museum of Moon.

Daniel (Dan) Tani offered to stand in for his colleague, Dr. Buzz Aldrin who can’t come for medical reasons – showing nice solidarity between astronauts!

Each year, ISU honors the memory of one of its greatest supporters, Dr. Gerald Soffen, with a lecture featuring a prominent visionary in the space sector.

Dan Tani, an American engineer and NASA astronaut has been on two space missions and conducted the 100th spacewalk on the International Space Station. Dan Tani will discuss human spaceflight, his experiences in space and the future of space exploration.

Born in Pennsylvania, he now considers Illinois to be his hometown with his two children and wife Jane Egan, who coincidentally hails from Cork. Tani was also Grand Marshall for the Cork St Patrick’s Parade in 2009, and is very proud that the biggest Space event in the world is taking place in Cork this summer.

His first flight to space happened in 2001, when he flew on the 12th flight on board the STS-108 Endeavour to the International Space Station (ISS). In 2002, Tani was a crew member on the Aquarius undersea research habitat for nine days as part of the NEEMO-2 mission (NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations). After that, Tani trained and qualified as the backup flight engineer for Expedition 11, which launched aboard the Soyuz TMA-6 in April 2005.

Tani was assigned to Expedition 16 as flight engineer, and launched to the station aboard STS-120 on October 23, 2007. Tani completed one EVA with the crew of STS-120, and four additional spacewalks during his increment aboard the space station.

Dan Tani will also be part of a public astronaut panel on July 4th with fellow astronauts Nicole Stott, Robert Thirsk and So-yeon Yi. Further information under – https://ssp17.isunet.edu/
