On 5 December 2018 at 19:16 CET, ISU’s Hydra-1 experiment was launched from Florida onboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket for delivery to the International Space Station (ISS). Hydra-1 is a plant synthetic biology experiment.

Master of Space Studies

Designed for students looking for the competitive edge that will help them obtain a career in the space sector, professionals interested in making a career move into or within the space sector, and researchers wishing to broaden their knowledge or make the move from academic life into the space industry.

Space Studies Program

Two-month course for postgraduate students and professionals of all disciplines. The curriculum covers the principal space related fields, both non-technical and technical. The shared experience of an international, interactive working environment is an ideal networking forum leading to the creation of an extensive, international, multidisciplinary professional network.

Southern Hemisphere Program

Intensive five week, live-in experience built around an international, intercultural, and interdisciplinary educational philosophy for which ISU is renowned. The program provides a multidisciplinary understanding of the key activities and areas of knowledge required by today’s space professions.

Executive Space Course

Provides an overview of space-related subjects for professionals of diverse backgrounds, including marketing, finance, law & contracts management. Professionals leave with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to communicate more effectively with their technical colleagues.

ISU MSS17 Alyssa Frayling Reports from the German Aerospace Center DLR


Alyssa Frayling, a Master of Space Studies MSS17 student from the International Space University (ISU) reports from DLR where she is carrying out her internship.

“I am currently completing my internship at Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR) – the German Aerospace Center.

DLR is one of the most significant space agencies in Europe, and the Chair of its Executive Board is none other than Prof. Dr. Pascale Ehrenfreund, who is of course also ISU’s very own Vice-Chancellor!

I am lucky enough to be based at the DLR Headquarters in Cologne, within the Department of International Relations. The photograph is by the way taken with Sebastian Kleim from this unit. This department, led by Nicolas Peter (ISU MSS02), coordinates all international relations activities for space, aeronautics, energy, transport, security, and digitalization for the agency, whilst also advising the Executive Board and DLR Space Administration on all current and proposed international activities.

Despite not being able to speak a word of German, my colleagues easily welcomed me into the team, and I’ve since been able to become involved in several different projects. My main focus is on Africa: making an inventory of countries and organizations involved in space activities in each of the 54 countries (if indeed there are any), and analyzing their potential in terms of partnerships. I’ve also been helping in developing DLR’s strategic positioning overall.”
