At the occasion of the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, Australia, an agreement was signed between the Honorable Susan Close, Minister for Education, representing the Government of South-Australia, Prof. Tanya Monro, Vice President, representing the University of South-Australia (UniSA) and Prof. Walter Peeters, president of ISU.

The main objective of the agreement is to enhance the cooperation of ISU in a sustainable way in South-Australia.

In analogy to the establishment of an Institute in the USA, it was felt important to have a similar footprint in the Asian Pacific Region. Based upon the successful Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program SH-SSP in cooperation with UniSA, the following steps are agreed:

  • A commitment was made to initially continue the SH-SSP program for five years. The advantage of this is that the organization of the program can now be established in a sustainable way.
  • All parties agreed to study activities during each year to organize events focusing on space entrepreneurship.
  • In order to have a more formal approach, the existence of a joint Institute, based in UniSA will be investigated.

With now 126 Australian alumni in ISU, it is evident that these steps will strengthen even more the presence of ISU in the Southern Hemisphere, making ISU even more global.
