ISU Involving Everyone at IAC18 in Bremen Germany

#involvingeveryone was the hashtag and baseline for this 69th edition of the International Astronautical Congress #IAC18. There could not have been a more appropriate theme to fit with ISU’s 3Is, International, Intercultural and Interdisciplinary – and community – 4600 alumni from over 105 countries.

“We have a good number of space professionals who offer internships and support to ISU and who are not alumni. Sometimes we hear about ISU being a closed club”, said freshly instating ISU president Juan de Dalmau during the ISU @IAC18 evening. He then continued “one of the things I mentioned in the interviews when ISU was selecting a president, is that we want to be a more open organization, we want to be more open to collaborations, also with those who don’t have the chance to be a student or alumni. I would invite everyone to thank those who are not alumni, who are members of the family. We are very thankful to you. We hope you will become alumni one day!”

The ISU gathering brought together 250 alumni who warmly welcomed the new president. ISU’s vice-chancellor, Prof. Pascale Ehrenfreund, chair of the German Aerospace Center executive board DLR and president elect of the International Astronautical Federation was impressed by the number of ISU participants to this IAC and especially by the passion and brightness of all. A number of alumni presented papers related to their previous ISU Team Project work, and we could count more than 150 presentations or sessions where speakers were ISU alumni.

The last three presidents of ISU, Karl Doetsch, Michael Simpson and Walter Peeters were also in attendance. Witnessing, in that packed room, the growth of the university and the attachment of the alumni to their alma mater.

The celebrations were topped by a visit of ISU co-founder Bob Richards!

The 69th edition of the International Astronautical Congress took place from 1-5 October 2018 at the state-of-the-art congress center of the city of Bremen, Germany. This city is well known to ISU where many alumni hold positions within companies like OHB.

ISU’s Space Studies Program took place in 2001 in Bremen. It was hosted by ZARM Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity.

Stay involved and let’s meet at IAC19 in Washington DC!

"My space flight was the changing point in my whole life. Since my background was mechanical engineering, I did not know much about space, which led me to the International Space University."
